Inaugurated Monument To Francesco Laparelli And Gerolamo Cassar 2016

The foreword for Dr Ganado’s Valletta Città Nuova – a map history (1566-1600), published in 2003, was written by the world-renowned cartographic specialist David Woodward. Shortly afterwards, Woodward visited Malta for the launch of the book and he had asked Dr Ganado to take him to see and photograph the monuments of the two architect-engineers, Francesco Laparelli and Gerolamo Cassar, who had designed the city of Valletta. Back then, Dr Ganado was forced to break the shameful truth that these monuments did not exist.

The long overdue monument commemorating the two architects was finally inaugurated in Valletta on 22 December 2016 thanks to the generous funding and patriotism of the Trustees of the Alfred Mizzi Foundation. The monument also commemorates the 450th Anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of Valletta. The bronze monument is the work of the Gozitan artist John Grima and is strategically placed in Ordinance Street next to the modern Parliament building designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano.
