The president of the Malta Map Society and the Malta Libraries at The Malta Book Festival 2022.

Today 24 November 2022, in the session ‘The Joy of Maps’ organised by Malta Libraries, students from Gzira Primary had the opportunity to discuss with the expert Joseph Schirò, collector and conservator of maps, as well as president of the Malta Map Society the joy of maps and the various messages and meanings that they convey. Whilst viewing replicas of some very particular maps, the students learnt about the way Valletta was built along a grid, about the engraving process involved in the making of traditional maps, about cartouches, legends and numbering, and about how cartographers used to depict Malta throughout the ages. The session closed with a custom-made map puzzle competition, which was thoroughly enjoyed by students and teachers.
